120 micron, and it is genuine PVC.

It comes down to two things a supplier can tell you in one line each: how thick the film is, and what it is actually made of.

120 micron, where the market sells 60 to 80
Most retail zipper packaging in South Africa is made at 60 to 80 micron. Ours is 120 — twice the thickness of a 60 micron bag, and half again as thick as an 80. The difference is not subtle when you pick one up. A 60 micron bag is a polybag; at 120 the PVC holds its own shape, so the bag stands up on a shelf instead of slumping around whatever is inside it.
It is genuine PVC, not a grip-seal bag
This is the confusion worth clearing up, because it costs people money. Search for clear zipper bags and most of what comes back is LDPE grip-seal: the thin commodity bag sold in packs of a hundred. It is a different material and a different product. PVC is heavier, holds a square shape, and does not crease into permanent white lines. If a quote is dramatically cheaper, the first question is what it is made of.
A bag people keep is a bag that keeps working
Because 120 micron does not warp, stretch or puncture easily, these tend to get kept. Customers reuse them for travel and storage long after the thing they bought is out of the bag, which quietly turns your packaging into something that is still doing a job months later. The zip is half of that; the thickness is the other half.
Thick film is also why the print lands flat
At 120 micron the PVC is rigid enough that a printed logo sits flat rather than distorting across a surface that flexes. Printing is full colour with no per-colour surcharge, the same as the frosted. One honest caveat particular to clear: your artwork sits over the product rather than on a blank ground, so a solid mark reads well while fine detail and pale tones can disappear against something busy. Send the artwork with your specification and you will hear which of those you have before it goes on press.

Clear or frosted — what each is for.

Both are PVC, both take the same full-colour printing, and both come in the same seven sizes. What separates them is simply how much of the product the customer sees first.

Worth knowing before you assume clear is the budget option: at 120 micron the clear film is the heavier of the two. The frosted is 100.

Frosted zipper bags, in full

Choose clear120 micron
When the product is the selling point, when someone has to identify it without opening the bag, or when you are picking and checking stock. Shows everything — including any handling it picks up on the way.
Choose frosted100 micron
When the packaging should look considered and the product is a reveal. Contents read as a shape and a colour, and the matte surface hides the fingerprints and scuffing a bag collects in transit.

Seven standard sizes, drawn to scale.

Every size below is written width × height in centimetres. Tap one to see what it holds. The range runs from 5 × 5 cm for a pair of studs up to 28 × 40 cm for a folded outfit, with four sizes in between.

All seven sizes, drawn to scale against each other. Dimensions are centimetres, width × height — worth checking, because suppliers list these both ways round and a 20 × 28 is not a 28 × 20.

Choose a size to see what it holds.

Not on the list? Custom sizes are made to order — send the dimensions of the item going inside and the bag gets specified around it. The full size guide covers how suppliers write these dimensions differently, which is worth two minutes before you compare quotes.

Not the same thing as a zip-lock grip bag.

Search for clear zipper bags and most of what comes back is a different product: LDPE grip-seal bags, sold in packs of a hundred, often intended for food storage. They cost a fraction of these and they should, because they are thin commodity film doing a different job.

These are 120 micron PVC. Heavier, squarer, made to be printed on and presented. Where South African retail zipper packaging is commonly made at 60 to 80 micron, this is twice the thickness of the thin end of that range. It holds its own shape rather than collapsing around whatever is inside it.

Two questions settle any comparison you are running: what micron is it and what is it actually made of. Both are quick to answer if the answer is good.

And if a cheap grip-seal bag genuinely is what you need, we are not the right supplier for it. You will be told that rather than quoted around it.

How micron and material actually change a bag

A clear PVC zipper bag with a solid single-colour logo printed on the front, the product inside still visible around and behind the printed mark.
Full colour on a transparent bag

Printing onto a transparent bag.

Full colour, with no per-colour surcharge. A photograph costs no more to print than a single-colour wordmark, so you do not have to simplify your brand to fit the process.

The honest caveat with clear: your artwork sits over the product rather than on an even background. A solid logo or a bold wordmark reads cleanly. Fine linework, pale tints and drop shadows can disappear against a busy or dark item. It is worth thinking about what will be inside the bag before deciding where the mark goes.

Send whatever artwork you have. You will be told before anything goes on press whether it will hold up at the size you want it — not after. What we need from your artwork.

What people pack in transparent bags.

The common thread is that somebody needs to see what is inside without opening it.

Warehouses, fulfilment and stock control

Anyone picking an order can see what is in the bag without opening it, which removes the step where a picker opens three bags to find the right one. On a shelf it means stock takes minutes rather than an afternoon.

Retail, where the product is the selling point

Some products argue for themselves and should not be covered up. A clear bag puts the item in front of the customer while still protecting it, and the printed logo sits alongside rather than in place of what they are buying.

Makers, crafters and resin work

Handmade pieces vary, and the variation is usually the reason someone buys. Clear packaging lets a customer pick the exact one they want off a market table without anything being unsealed and handled first.

Components, spares and kit packing

Fixings, findings, spares and multi-part kits are far easier to deal with when the contents are visible. The zip means a part-used bag reseals instead of being taped shut or tipped into a drawer.

Jewellery that should be seen

The 5 × 5 and 7 × 7 sizes suit studs, rings and pendants, and clear is the choice when the piece itself is doing the selling. If you would rather the packaging led and the piece was a reveal, the frosted version is the one to look at.

What they look like in use.

Select any photograph to look closely. On packaging, the film and the print quality are the whole decision.

Ordering alongside pouches or lanyards

Clear zipper bags sit on the same quote as frosted zipper bags, lanyard pouches and branded lanyards. Mixing both finishes on one order is normal — clear for the lines that sell on sight, frosted for the ones that do not. Note the minimums differ: 50 units on zipper bags, 100 on pouches and lanyards.

Clear zipper bags, answered.

120 micron, which makes them the heavier of the two finishes we supply — the frosted is 100. For comparison, retail zipper packaging in South Africa is commonly made at 80 micron. Thickness is what stops the bag collapsing around the item inside and creasing in transit.
